After the Civil War began in 1861, the newly established Confederate government started issuing its own currency. The first Confederate States of America notes appeared in April 1861, with production continuing until 1864. Many of these notes have uneven or rough borders, as they were quickly cut from sheets using scissors or shears, a common wartime practice. Each note was hand-numbered and hand-signed.
