Features:
The Jason Islands are a remote archipelago located within the Falkland Islands, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic Ocean. In 1970, part of the Jason Islands was purchased by British businessman Leonard Hill, who established a penguin sanctuary on the islands. After Hill's death, the islands he had owned were acquired by American investors Michael and Judy Steinhardt, who then donated that portion of the Jason Islands to the Wildlife Conservation Society in order to preserve the penguin colonies and other wildlife.
The remaining islands in the Jason Islands archipelago are designated as nature reserves, owned and managed by the Falkland Islands Government. These protected areas harbor diverse seabird populations, including important breeding grounds for several penguin species.
The Jason Islands are an ecologically significant region, providing crucial habitat for many of the Falkland Islands' endemic and threatened animal species. The combination of privately-protected areas and government-owned nature reserves helps ensure the long-term conservation of this remote island ecosystem.
