The Republic of Burundi was established in 1966; the economic capital is Bujumbura, which lies on the North East of Lake Tanganyika. The political capital is Gitega. French and Kirundi are the official languages spoken. The terrain is hilly and mountainous, dropping to a plateau in the East. It is landlocked in the Great African Lakes region of East Africa. The currency used is the Burundi Franc (BIF). It is divided into 100 centimes, although coins were never issued.
