The idea originated in early 2013, with Andrew Connolly and Peter Scherschel leading a six-year effort to promote and develop the scheme. An online app was tested in 2014, followed by a full launch in 2015. The pivotal moment came in November when Kingston Borough Council agreed to accept business rate payments with the e-pound. Kingston Pounds were officially unveiled to the public in October 2018 at Kingston University, featuring unique designs by graduates Ella Hilton and Molly Dunne. Noteworthy features include the ability to align the note with a Kingston landmark for a perfectly framed photo, complete with printed coordinates for precision.
